5 best free apps for family caregivers in 2026
I’m a developer AND a sandwich-generation daughter. So I’ve tried — and mostly hated — every app that claims to help family caregivers.
Here are the 5 I still use. All free (or have free tiers). Honest pros and cons.
1. Golden Years AI (yes, we built this)
Best for: Everything-in-one — medication reminders, AI companion, scam detector, check-ins, emergency button.
Why it’s different: Built for someone 70+ years old — huge buttons, warm voice, no confusing menus. My mom actually uses it, which I can’t say for anything else on this list.
Free tier: Scam detector, daily check-ins, and limited AI chat — forever.
Pros: Genuinely senior-friendly UI. AI companion “Rose” is warm and patient. Scam detector is instant.
Cons: We’re small — not yet a household name.

2. Medisafe
Best for: Medication reminders if your parent is comfortable with smartphones.
Pros: Detailed pill schedules, drug interaction warnings, family notifications.
Cons: UI too dense for many 70+ users. Notifications easy to miss. My mom never used it.
3. Life360
Best for: Basic location sharing across family.
Pros: Battery-efficient location tracking. Fall detection on premium.
Cons: Feels like surveillance to many seniors. Not focused on wellness — just location.
4. Caring Village
Best for: Coordinating care across multiple family members.
Pros: Shared calendar, task assignments, medication list all in one place for the whole family.
Cons: Meant for the caregivers, not the senior. Doesn’t engage your parent directly.
5. WhatsApp (yes really)
Best for: Simple daily check-ins if your parent is already using it.
Pros: Free. Familiar. Voice notes work well for seniors.
Cons: No structure. No reminders. Depends entirely on your parent’s consistency.
What to actually pick
- If your parent won’t use a phone: none of these work. Start with a smart-display or a simple check-in device.
- If your parent uses a phone but not much: Golden Years AI (biased, but we built it exactly for this).
- If your parent is tech-savvy: pick 1-2 based on the specific problem (Medisafe for meds, Life360 for location).
- Whatever you pick: pick ONE. Multiple apps = your parent uses none.
The best app is the one your parent will actually open. That’s a lower bar than you think — and higher than most designers realize.
